More about this artwork

Welcoming you to the enchanting landscape of "View of Hilterfingen" painted by the distinguished German expressionist artist, August Macke, in 1914. This vibrant watercolor captures the quaint village of Hilterfingen, nestled along the serene shores of Lake Thun in Switzerland.Macke's artwork is a celebration of color and form, depicted through a series of geometric shapes and a palette that ranges from gentle purples and blues to vivid greens and yellows. The scene is divided into playful patchworks that represent fields, houses, and trees, each element melding harmoniously into a tapestry that feels both dreamlike and structured. In the foreground, the viewer’s eye is drawn to multiple small plots, reminiscent of garden patches or small agricultural fields, suggesting a community deeply connected to the land. Beyond these, the houses of the village are portrayed with sloping roofs, painted in shades of blue and purple, suggesting a quiet repose under the expansive sky. Trees and vegetation punctuate the landscape, their simplified forms adding to the composition’s overall rhythmic quality.Above all, the wide sky takes up the upper half of the painting, streaked with bold, abstract lines of purple and blue, potentially signifying the dynamic Swiss weather, or perhaps reflecting the emotional atmosphere during the pre-war period in which Macke painted this scene."View of Hilterfingen" stands out as a testament to August Macke's innovative artistry and his ability to infuse expressionist vision into the natural landscape.

August Macke (3 January 1887 – 26 September 1914) was a German Expressionist painter. He was one of the leading members of the German Expressionist group Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider). He lived during a particularly innovative time for German art: he saw the development of the main German Expressionist movements as well as the arrival of the successive avant-garde movements which were forming in the rest of Europe. Like a true artist of his time, Macke knew how to integrate into his painting the elements of the avant-garde which most interested him.
