More about this artwork

This evocative painting by the English artist John Frederick Lewis, titled "A Street Scene in Granada on the Day of the Bullfight," masterfully captures the vibrant atmosphere and colorful activities associated with a bullfighting event in the historically rich city of Granada. Painted in 1833, the artwork is teeming with life and detail, offering viewers a window into 19th-century Spanish culture.Depicted in the foreground are a man and a woman, exquisitely dressed in traditional Spanish attire, mounted on a horse. The woman is elegantly seated, wearing a striking red skirt and black lace, while the man, presumably a toreador, sports a detailed white shirt and is looking fondly at her. This interaction not only portrays a sense of intimacy and camaraderie but also emphasizes the significant social and festive aspects of the day.To the left, two men are seen engaging jovially, one possibly a musician with a guitar slung behind his back, highlighting the music and celebratory cheers that traditionally accompany a bullfight. The inclusion of a dog further down, curiously sniffing around, adds to the realism and bustling nature of the street scene. In the background, the painting opens up to the architecture of Granada with its towering buildings and distant hills, draped in a soft haze, inviting the viewer to appreciate the beautiful urban landscape that frames this lively social scene.

John Frederick Lewis was an English Orientalist painter. He specialized in Oriental and Mediterranean scenes in detailed watercolour or oils, very often repeating the same composition in a version in each medium. He lived for several years in a traditional mansion in Cairo, and after his return to England in 1851 he specialized in highly detailed works showing both realistic genre scenes of Middle Eastern life and more idealized scenes in upper class Egyptian interiors with little apparent Western influence.
