More about this artwork

Hans Zatzka, a renowned Austrian painter known for his masterful depiction of feminine and idyllic scenes, brings us a delightful rural vignette in his painting titled "Quälgeister" ("Tormenting Spirits"). This artwork captures a serene, yet playful moment outside a charming countryside dwelling. In the foreground, two young women showcase the contrast in their expressions and postures. On the left, one leans weariedly against a barrel, her gaze directed tenderly towards a resting brown dog at her side, suggesting her compassionate nature. She is dressed in vibrant colors—reds, greens, and yellows—that highlight her dynamic and perhaps spirited personality. The gardening tools lying nearby and her casual attire speak to a day spent in nature's company. On the right, the second woman sits elegantly on a bench, dressed in a traditional attire with a mix of soft and vivid hues. Her poised posture and satisfied smile express her contentment and perhaps a gentle amusement at her companion's predicament. Her hat, adorned with a bright red ribbon, adds a touch of refined style to the pastoral setting. The peaceful dwelling, with its rustic charm, is adorned with lush, flowering vines that frame the scene, adding a burst of natural beauty and a sense of flourishing life. Behind them, the landscape stretches into a serene backdrop of distant hills, offering a glimpse into the expansive, tranquil environment.Zatzka's "Quälgeister" not only portrays a moment of leisure and companionship but also reflects the beauty and tranquility of rural life.

Hans Zatzka (8 March 1859 – 17 December 1945 or 1949) was an Austrian Academic and fantasy painter. He has sometimes been known as P. Ronsard, Pierre de Ronsard, or H. Zabateri, and signed many of his works as Joseph BernardJ. Bernard, or Bernard Zatzka. The purpose of Zatzka's vast array of pseudonyms was to avoid penalties of breaking contracts which limited the amount of artwork he could sell. This has caused some art databases to conflate Zatzka's work under the pseudonym Joseph Bernard with the French sculptor with the same name.
