More about this artwork
"Thinking of Him" is a captivating painting by artist Hans Zatzka, renowned for his ability to blend vibrant scenes of romanticism with intricately detailed characters. The painting invites viewers into a serene, lush garden setting, where the central figure, a young woman, sits elegantly on a garden bench. Her attire is exquisitely detailed, consisting of a flowing pink dress adorned with delicate flowers, which mirror the blooms that fill the surrounding landscape. As she wistfully throws food to the small birds gathered at her feet, her gaze is indirect, suggesting a moment of introspection or daydreaming, possibly about a distant love, as implied by the painting's title. To her left, a playful cherub tugs gently at a flower, adding a whimsical element of innocence and mythological charm. The composition is rich with soft hues and the gentle interplay of light and shadow, creating an atmosphere of both tranquility and a subtle longing.

Hans Zatzka (8 March 1859 – 17 December 1945 or 1949) was an Austrian Academic and fantasy painter. He has sometimes been known as P. Ronsard, Pierre de Ronsard, or H. Zabateri, and signed many of his works as Joseph Bernard, J. Bernard, or Bernard Zatzka. The purpose of Zatzka's vast array of pseudonyms was to avoid penalties of breaking contracts which limited the amount of artwork he could sell. This has caused some art databases to conflate Zatzka's work under the pseudonym Joseph Bernard with the French sculptor with the same name.
