More about this artwork
August Macke's woodcut "Begrüssung" ("Greeting") shines as a testament to his expressive, avant-garde style, which beautifully marries elements of German Expressionism and early abstraction. This remarkable work, steeped in a stark black-and-white contrast, captures an intimate moment that resonates with both simplicity and depth. The scene portrays two figures who appear to be embracing or engaging in a heartfelt greeting. The figures are stylized with smooth, flowing lines that convey movement and emotion, despite the absence of detailed facial expressions. This approach highlights Macke’s ability to distill emotion and connectivity into basic forms and lines, a hallmark of his artistic legacy.Surrounding the figures, the environment is starkly suggested rather than fully depicted. Abstract forms reminiscent of leaves and branches provide a natural backdrop that frames this human interaction, emphasizing the unity between humanity and nature—a theme often revisited in Macke’s work."Begrüssung" not only captures a moment of human connection but also reflects Macke's exploration of the woodcut medium’s potential to convey profound emotional and thematic depth through minimalistic yet powerful compositions.

August Macke (3 January 1887 – 26 September 1914) was a German Expressionist painter. He was one of the leading members of the German Expressionist group Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider). He lived during a particularly innovative time for German art: he saw the development of the main German Expressionist movements as well as the arrival of the successive avant-garde movements which were forming in the rest of Europe. Like a true artist of his time, Macke knew how to integrate into his painting the elements of the avant-garde which most interested him.
