More about this artwork
In the serene landscape of Martinus Rørbye's 1826 ink and wash drawing titled "Parti ved Eremitagen, med udsigt til Stranden" (Scene at the Hermitage, with a View to the Beach), viewers are offered a glimpse of a peaceful moment captured near an old hermitage. The setting features a group of figures seated around a table on a wooden balcony, deeply engaged in conversation. Their casual postures and attire suggest a moment of leisure and camaraderie on a sunny day.To the left, another figure stands by the balcony railing, overlooking a vast, open landscape that stretches towards a distant beach. This figure, isolated from the group, adds a contemplative balance to the social scene. Below the balcony, the hermitage is partially visible, with its rustic wooden architecture harmonizing with the natural surroundings. The foreground is marked by gentle, rolling dunes, dotted with sparse vegetation, leading the viewer's eye towards the tranquil scene at the balcony. The meticulous detail in the drawing, from the individual blades of grass to the texture of the wooden structures, exemplifies Rørbye's skill in rendering both architectural and natural elements with precision and sensitivity.

Martinus Christian Wesseltoft Rørbye was a Danish painter, known both for genre works and landscapes. He was a central figure of the Golden Age of Danish painting during the first half of the 19th century.
The most traveled of the Danish Golden Age painters, he traveled both north to Norway and Sweden and south to Italy, Greece and Constantinople. He was also the first Danish painter to take to painting in Skagen at the northern top of Jutland, almost half a century before the thriving community of Skagen Painters formed and came to fame, through Michael Ancher, Anna Ancher and P.S. Krøyer.
