More about this artwork

On this vibrant and engaging artwork by August Macke titled "Straße mit Leuten (klein)" ("Street with People (small)"), the German Expressionist painter exemplifies his unique style characterized by vivid colors and simple forms. Created in 1913, the watercolor painting portrays abstract figures bustling along a nondescript street. Macke's use of thin, almost transparent lines and washed out hues lends an otherworldly and ghostly air to the scene. The forms in the painting are simplified and sketched with minimal detail, which allows the focus to remain on the interplay of colors and shapes rather than on individual identities or facial features. Splashes of yellow, red, purple, and green dot the composition, suggesting the dynamic and lively atmosphere of an urban street. The abstract representation of the figures and the architectural environment reflect Macke's exploration of color's emotional and expressive potential rather than a realistic portrayal of a specific location."Straße mit Leuten (klein)" exemplifies the early 20th-century avant-garde movement where traditional boundaries of form and color were reimagined, providing viewers a glimpse into the modern life through the lens of expressionist art.

August Macke (3 January 1887 – 26 September 1914) was a German Expressionist painter. He was one of the leading members of the German Expressionist group Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider). He lived during a particularly innovative time for German art: he saw the development of the main German Expressionist movements as well as the arrival of the successive avant-garde movements which were forming in the rest of Europe. Like a true artist of his time, Macke knew how to integrate into his painting the elements of the avant-garde which most interested him.
