More about this artwork
We are delighted to feature "Under the Roof of Blue Ionian Weather" by the illustrious 19th-century painter Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema on our museum's website. Renowned for his mastery in depicting the luxurious and articulate details of the ancient world, Alma-Tadema's work often includes environments that celebrate both architectural beauty and idyllic, serene settings. This magnificent painting plunges the viewer into a tranquil scene set on a sunlit terrace overlooking the crystalline blue sea. The setting is adorned with lush pink flowers that subtly contrast the cool stone architecture, typifying Alma-Tadema's attentiveness to nature's vibrant colors against man-made structures. The painting shows a group of women clad in flowing, classical robes engrossed in various states of leisure and conversation. Their relaxed postures and the ample sunlight washing over them evoke a sense of peaceful contemplation and leisure typical of a warm, Mediterranean afternoon. Each figure is rendered with exquisite detail, from the folds of their garments to the serene expressions on their faces, capturing the essence of serene existence under the Ionian sun.

Born in Dronrijp, the Netherlands, and trained at the Royal Academy of Antwerp, Belgium, he settled in England in 1870 and spent the rest of his life there. A classical-subject painter, he became famous for his depictions of the luxury and decadence of the Roman Empire, with languorous figures set in fabulous marbled interiors or against a backdrop of dazzling blue Mediterranean Sea and sky. Alma-Tadema was considered one of the most popular Victorian painters.
