More about this artwork

Titled "Cherries" and crafted in 1873, this enthralling work by Lawrence Alma-Tadema masterfully captures a serene, almost contemplative moment. The painting features a young woman delicately dressed in a flowing gown festooned with vibrant floral patterns, relaxing against a richly textured tiger skin. She gazes out towards the viewer, her expression thoughtful and serene. In her hand, she loosely holds a small cluster of cherries, drawing a charming parallel to the additional cherries laid out on the table beside her.The background of the painting is elegantly simple yet effective, with warm, earthy tones and subtle decorative motifs that complement the foreground's vibrant textures and colors. The placement of classical architecture in the frame adds a grandeur that enriches the overall opulent feel of the scene.Alma-Tadema's famed attention to detail is evident in the intricacy of the textiles and the lifelike representation of the cherries. This painting not only showcases Alma-Tadema's skill in rendering fabrics and flesh but also his ability to evoke a relaxed and intimate atmosphere.

Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema was a Dutch painter of special British denizenship. Born in Dronrijp, the Netherlands, and trained at the Royal Academy of Antwerp, Belgium, he settled in England in 1870 and spent the rest of his life there. A classical-subject painter, he became famous for his depictions of the luxury and decadence of the Roman Empire, with languorous figures set in fabulous marbled interiors or against a backdrop of dazzling blue Mediterranean Sea and sky. Alma-Tadema was considered one of the most popular Victorian painters.
