More about this artwork

Charles Demuth's ca. 1918 piece, "Tree Abstraction (probably study for Red Chimneys)," reveals the artist's exploration into the realm of modernist abstraction during the early 20th century. In this painting, Demuth delicately maneuvers the lines and colors to abstract the form of a tree, intermingling elements of reality with abstraction. The composition boasts a graceful, curvaceous black line that undulates vertically across the canvas, representing the tree's trunk and branches. This central figure is highlighted with washes of color—subtle reds and pinks—that hint at more expansive or possibly industrial elements, a motif suggestive of chimneys, as referenced in the study's title. These industrial elements contrast with and yet complement the natural forms, bridging nature and human constructs. The background of the painting is muted, composed of soft pencil lines that sketch out additional, less defined shapes and structures. This understated backdrop allows the vibrant tree and hinted architectural elements to command the viewer’s focus."Tree Abstraction" not only emphasizes Demuth's skill in blending abstraction with figuration but also reflects the transformation in his artistic interests, particularly his experimentation with Cubism and Precisionism.

Charles Demuth (1883-1935) was one of the leading artists during the American Modernism era. He was distinguished for intimate watercolors and cubic architectural paintings. Demuth studied art at Académie Julian in Paris, where he was welcomed into the avant-garde art scene and met other American Cubism artists like Marsden Hartley. His watercolor figures have a weightless and surrealistic character with a sensitive linear style, in which he illustrated plays and novels such as Émile Zola's Nana. He also depicted an evolving gay scene of encounters at bath houses through watercolors for his close friends, like the "Turkish Bath", works that now are of great historical significance. Demuth later employed a cubist technique by painting industrial factories with complex structural planes, leading him to becoming a pioneer for the precisionist movement.
