More about this artwork

Our current digital exhibit is pleased to feature "Soleil Couchant" (Sunset), a stunning painting by the renowned Barbizon school artist Théodore Rousseau. This artwork beautifully captures the ephemeral moments of a sunset, rendering the sky in a palette of fiery oranges, cool blues, and delicate yellows. Rousseau's skill in portraying the transient effects of light is evident as these colors reflect off the gentle ripples of a wide, tranquil river. The foreground of the painting showcases a soothing, rather muted landscape, which contrasts sharply with the lively, richly colored sky. Dark, silhouetted trees punctuate the landscape, their reflections glimpsed in the still water below, enhancing the painting's deep, contemplative quality. The expansive, cloud-filled sky dominates the composition, with its vast and layered portrayal inviting viewers into a moment of quiet reflection."Soleil Couchant" is a prime example of Rousseau's dedication to naturalistic scenes and his mastery of atmospheric effects, embodying the Barbizon school’s ethos of expressing a personal emotional response to nature. This painting not only emphasizes the beauty of the natural world but also evokes a strong sense of peace and timelessness, encouraging us to pause and connect with the environment.

Étienne Pierre Théodore Rousseau was a French painter of the Barbizon school.

He was born in Paris, France in a bourgeois family. At first he received a basic level of training, but soon displayed aptitude for painting. Although his father regretted the decision at first, he became reconciled to his son forsaking business, and throughout the artist's career (for he survived his son) was a sympathizer with him in all his conflicts with the Paris Salon authorities.
