More about this artwork
We proudly present a delightful sketch by Joseph Farington, titled "Castle with a Round Tower Above a River". This pen and ink drawing captures an idyllic, yet fortifying scene possibly inspired by the rustic landscapes of England. Dominating the composition is a robust round tower that appears to rise protectively above the surrounding land. Adjacent structures suggest a fortified compound or an extended estate with partially visible edifices scattered across the terrain. The foreground is gracefully occupied by a serene river, reflecting a portion of the lively sky, with a small boat delicately sketched on its quiet waters, suggesting the presence of daily life and tranquility. Leafy trees flank the river banks and building, adding a natural charm to the architectural grandeur.Farington's light and confident strokes provide a swift and expressive overview of this panoramic rural setting, encapsulating the typical 18th-century English countryside with its picturesque and historical architecture entwined with nature.
