More about this artwork
In "Three Houses" (1922), created by the influential modernist painter Paul Klee, there is a delightful play of geometry and color that invites viewers into a minimalist, yet profound visual exploration. This painting features three abstracted houses depicted in a range of harmonious, earthy tones and watery greens that blend seamlessly with each other, offering a soothing yet intriguing visual impact. The composition is grounded in simplicity, with each house represented as a combination of geometric shapes such as triangles and rectangles. These forms are stacked and overlap in a rhythmic pattern, suggesting a village scene as might be seen in a child's drawing, yet carrying the sophistication of a master's touch. The vast, unembellished expanse at the top of the painting, colored in muted green and marked by a single, stylized circular sun, enhances the sense of tranquility and timelessness."Three Houses" exemplifies Klee's mastery in using color and shape to evoke emotion and narrative. Through his unique visual language, viewers are encouraged to interpret the scene in a personal way, all the while appreciating the beauty in the essential forms and boundaries of abstract art.

Paul Klee was a Swiss-born German artist. His highly individual style was influenced by movements in art that included expressionism, cubism, and surrealism. Klee was a natural draftsman who experimented with and eventually deeply explored color theory, writing about it extensively; his lectures Writings on Form and Design Theory (Schriften zur Form und Gestaltungslehre), published in English as the Paul Klee Notebooks, are held to be as important for modern art as Leonardo da Vinci's A Treatise on Painting for the Renaissance.
