More about this artwork

"Corfu from Ascension 2" by Edward Lear is a mesmerizing landscape painting that captures the rugged beauty and enchanting atmosphere of Corfu, an island off Greece's northwest coast. Lear, known for his detailed and atmospheric landscapes, presents a view filled with contrasts and rich details in this particular work. The painting portrays a serene scene viewed from a high vantage point. The foreground is dominated by the ruins, possibly of an ancient temple, scattered and overtaken by nature, symbolizing the rich history and the passage of time. Beyond this, a cluster of olive trees, typical of the Greek landscape, leads the eye towards the shimmering blue sea, where a few sailboats dot the tranquil waters. One of the most striking elements of the painting is the beautifully rendered mountains in the distance, possibly the Albanian coast, whose snow-capped peaks stand in stark contrast to the warm tones of the foreground. This not only adds depth to the scene but also enhances the idyllic and peaceful mood of the painting.Lear's use of light and shadow, along with his meticulous attention to the details of the natural environment, from the flora to the rocky terrain, makes "Corfu from Ascension 2" a vivid and compelling portrayal of one of Greece's most beloved landscapes.

Edward Lear (12 May 1812 – 29 January 1888) was an English artist, illustrator, musician, author and poet, who is known mostly for his literary nonsense in poetry and prose and especially his limericks, a form he popularised.

His principal areas of work as an artist were threefold: as a draughtsman employed to make illustrations of birds and animals; making coloured drawings during his journeys, which he reworked later, sometimes as plates for his travel books; and as a (minor) illustrator of Alfred, Lord Tennyson's poems.

As an author, he is known principally for his popular nonsense collections of poems, songs, short stories, botanical drawings, recipes and alphabets. He also composed and published twelve musical settings of Tennyson's poetry.
