More about this artwork
John Linnell's evocative etching, "A Hen," showcases the artist's keen observation and deft sketching ability. Known for his works that often explored rural life and naturalistic themes, Linnell delivers a striking depiction of a hen in this piece. At first glance, the viewer is drawn to the bird's prominent and slightly chaotic crest, which adds a touch of wildness to its appearance. The hen's feathers are rendered with quick, confident strokes that convey both texture and movement, suggesting the softness and layering of the plumage. The background is minimal, consisting only of sketchy lines that ground the subject without detracting from its form. This artwork, though simple in composition, is rich in detail and character, embodying the rustic beauty of everyday farm life.
