More about this artwork

Edward Lear’s picturesque rendering of "Thermopylae, Greece" from 1848 captures the ethereal beauty of one of history’s most storied landscapes. In this delicate watercolor, Lear portrays the tranquil setting of the pass at Thermopylae, known famously as the site of the ancient battle where the Spartan King Leonidas and his men made their legendary stand against the Persian army. The artwork draws viewers into a serene panorama where the rugged mountains loom grandly over a subtle expanse of land and water. At the foreground, the marshy edges of a reflective lake are depicted with precise yet tender brushwork, perfectly conveying the soft presence of waterside vegetation. Furthering the sense of depth, small structures nestle under the embracing slopes of the mountains in the midground, suggesting human habitation in harmony with the natural environment. The distant mountains, bathed in mellow tones and gentle light, recede into a skyline brushed with light, wispy clouds, suggesting the vastness and peace of the landscape despite its historical significance as a battleground. This painting by Lear not only reflects his ability to capture the essence of a landscape but also invites contemplation on the rich historical layers that places like Thermopylae hold.

Edward Lear (12 May 1812 – 29 January 1888) was an English artist, illustrator, musician, author and poet, who is known mostly for his literary nonsense in poetry and prose and especially his limericks, a form he popularised.

His principal areas of work as an artist were threefold: as a draughtsman employed to make illustrations of birds and animals; making coloured drawings during his journeys, which he reworked later, sometimes as plates for his travel books; and as a (minor) illustrator of Alfred, Lord Tennyson's poems.

As an author, he is known principally for his popular nonsense collections of poems, songs, short stories, botanical drawings, recipes and alphabets. He also composed and published twelve musical settings of Tennyson's poetry.
