More about this artwork
"Signs in the Sky" (1924) by Paul Klee is a compelling exploration of symbol and abstraction, where the artist invites us to decipher a mystical language written across a dreamlike landscape. The painting showcases a nightmarish but enchanting scenario under a dusky, starless sky, rendered in moody hues of blue and grey. Central to the artwork are various enigmatic symbols and shapes hovering in the skies, which feel almost alive with cryptic meanings. In the lower half of the canvas, Klee depicts a quaint, almost surreal village setting. The buildings and trees, portrayed in darker tones, seem to be shrouded in the night's embrace, their forms simplified and stylized to echo motifs found in folk art. This fusion of the abstract with the elemental gives the scene a sense of timeless tranquility, contrasted by the dynamic activity above. The sky itself is an otherworldly canvas, featuring what appear to be celestial bodies or arcane objects. Among these symbols, a red, sun-like orb draws particular attention, filled with intricate, script-like markings that suggest a language we're poised to learn. This piece embodies Klee's deep interest in the subconscious, offering a visual representation of the cosmic and the unknown that challenges the viewer’s perception.

Paul Klee was a Swiss-born German artist. His highly individual style was influenced by movements in art that included expressionism, cubism, and surrealism. Klee was a natural draftsman who experimented with and eventually deeply explored color theory, writing about it extensively; his lectures Writings on Form and Design Theory (Schriften zur Form und Gestaltungslehre), published in English as the Paul Klee Notebooks, are held to be as important for modern art as Leonardo da Vinci's A Treatise on Painting for the Renaissance.
