More about this artwork

Maurice Denis, a renowned figure in the world of art infamous for his involvement with the Nabis movement, has masterfully painted "Visitation dans l’escalier de ‘Silencio’" in 1921. This painting captivates the viewer with its ethereal and almost mystical representation of a moment captured on a staircase. In this artwork, four figures are elegantly poised within a serene architectural setting that radiates a warm, earthy palette. The scene unfolds on an old stairway that brings out rust hues, complementing the cool tones of the figures’ attire. Two women, one dressed in a flowing celestial blue robe, seemingly greet each other on the staircase, stirring an air of solemnity and grace. One of them, positioned higher on the steps, gestures invitingly towards the ascending figure, whose hands are raised in a gesture that mixes surprise and devotion.Below this interaction, to the side of the staircase, another seated figure lends a watchful gaze to the scene, adding a layer of quiet observation. At the foot of the stairs, a man attired in a vibrantly bordered cloak watches the scene, his attention directed towards the celestial interactions above him. The way these figures interact with one another and the space around them, combined with Denis' deft use of light and shadow, suggests a narrative steeped in reverence and quietude."Visitation dans l’escalier de ‘Silencio’" evokes a spiritual or mystical encounter, beautifully rendered in Denis' post-impressionistic style.

French painter Maurice Denis (1870-1943) was one of the leading artists during the transition from Impressionism to Modern Art. He was heavily influenced by the Symbolist works of Paul Gauguin. Denis would paint with rich colors and experiment with warm and cool colors. Some of his theories have become the foundations of cubism, fauvism, and abstract art.
