More about this artwork

Edward Lear's enchanting watercolor, "The Gorge at Suk Wady Barada, Lebanon," created in 1858, invites viewers into a rugged and serene vista. This masterful artwork captures a striking scene of the deep gorge in Lebanon, showcasing Lear's keen eye for the beauty of the natural world. In this painting, Lear portrays the grandeur of the gorge with its steep, rocky walls creating a dramatic contrast against the soft blues and pale yellows of the sky and land. The perspective leads the viewer’s gaze down a winding pathway in the foreground, through scattered boulders and sparse vegetation, toward a serene river that meanders gracefully through the canyon below. The artist's delicate yet precise brushstrokes imbue the scene with a sense of tranquility, while the skillful play of light and shadow emphasizes the textures of the rock faces and highlights the expansive depth of the gorge. Lear, known primarily for his travelogues and landscapes, showcases his ability to blend precise detail with atmospheric mood in this evocative composition. This painting not only reflects Lear's artistic prowess but also provides a window into the captivating landscapes of the Middle East, as seen through the eyes of a 19th-century European traveler. It stands as a testament to Lear's enduring passion for exploring and documenting the world’s diverse environments.

Edward Lear (12 May 1812 – 29 January 1888) was an English artist, illustrator, musician, author and poet, who is known mostly for his literary nonsense in poetry and prose and especially his limericks, a form he popularised.

His principal areas of work as an artist were threefold: as a draughtsman employed to make illustrations of birds and animals; making coloured drawings during his journeys, which he reworked later, sometimes as plates for his travel books; and as a (minor) illustrator of Alfred, Lord Tennyson's poems.

As an author, he is known principally for his popular nonsense collections of poems, songs, short stories, botanical drawings, recipes and alphabets. He also composed and published twelve musical settings of Tennyson's poetry.
