More about this artwork

The painting "Wall Tryst" from "The Flower Book" by Edward Burne-Jones captures a quietly intimate moment, rendered with delicate and meticulous detail. This piece is enclosed within a circular frame that draws focus directly to the subject, enhancing the sense of a private glimpse into another world. In the artwork, we see a solitary female figure paused by an ancient stone wall, her hand tenderly touching the rough surface. She is dressed in a flowing, golden gown that drapes elegantly to the ground, suggesting a setting in a historical or mythological time. Her hair is styled in an intricate braid that crowns her head, adding to her ethereal aura. The setting appears to be a secluded, shadowed alcove possibly within a garden, as suggested by glimpses of foliage and a dark cypress tree to the right, adding a sense of depth and natural beauty to the scene. The overall mood is one of anticipation or reflection, possibly awaiting a meeting or recovering from a parting. The subtlety of emotion is captured in her posture and the gentle placing of her hand against the wall, conveying a sense of longing or contemplation.Burne-Jones's style, known for its dreamlike quality and its roots in Pre-Raphaelite ideals, focuses on beauty and intricate detail, as is evident in the texture of the wall and the folds of the woman’s attire.

Sir Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898) was a British designer and Victorian narrative painter. He was born in Birmingham to a picture-framer. He intended to become a minister and studied theology at Oxford. However, his life took a turn when he met William Morris. Together they formed The Brotherhood, a society worshipping the poets and architecture of the middle ages. They both worked together on several projects for Morris & Co. Burne-Jones designed tapestries, jewellery, sculptures, ceramics, furniture and stained glass for the company. His artworks truly captured the spirit of the nineteenth century and the Arts and Crafts movement. In recent decades his art has had a renaissance and become among the most expensive pre-raphaelite artworks to be sold at auction.
