More about this artwork
The painting "Berglandschap met veehoeder en twee koeien," created by renowned Dutch artist Jozef Israëls, showcases the serene beauty of a mountainous landscape, inhabited and gracefully animated by a cattle herder and two cows. The work, delicately executed with watercolors, captures a tranquil pastoral scene set against the backdrop of rugged mountains draped under a softly clouded sky.Foregrounded in the composition are the two cows and the herder, imbued with a sense of calm and mundane task of tending to the animals. The subtle interaction between the herder and the cows adds a narrative element to the image, inviting viewers to contemplate the quiet, daily life that unfolds in such peaceful, yet majestic surroundings.Israëls' expertise in handling light and naturalistic details is evident, as he uses washes of color to convey the varying textures and tones of the landscape—from the lush green fields in the valley to the misty grays and blues of the distant mountains.

Jozef Israëls was a Dutch painter. He was a leading member of the group of landscape painters referred to as the Hague School and, during his lifetime, "the most respected Dutch artist of the second half of the nineteenth century".
He was born in Groningen, of Jewish parents. His father, Hartog Abraham Israëls, intended for him to be a businessman, and it was only after a determined struggle that he was allowed to embark on an artistic career. He studied initially from 1835 to 1842 at the Minerva Academy in his home town Groningen.
