More about this artwork

Welcome to our exploration of Anthony van Dyck's fascinating painting titled "Five Eldest Children of Charles I." This artwork, a captivating example of Van Dyck's skill in portraying royal subjects, features an intimate and richly detailed glimpse into the lives of the British royal family during the 17th century. The painting beautifully captures the five eldest children of King Charles I of England: Charles (later King Charles II), Mary, James (later King James II), Elizabeth, and Anne. Each child is depicted with a remarkable individuality that speaks to Van Dyck’s mastery in portraiture. The future King Charles II stands prominently at the center, dressed in an elegant red and white outfit, demonstrating his central role within the family and the monarchy. His hand rests confidently on the head of a large, noble mastiff, symbolizing loyalty and protection. To his left, Princess Mary and Princess Elizabeth are dressed in delicate, flowing garments that reflect their youthful innocence and high status. Their poised expressions and the subtle interplay of light on their dresses showcase Van Dyck’s ability to render textiles and emotions with equal skill. On the right, Prince James, wearing a red outfit that mirrors his elder brother's, gazes out towards the viewer, while the youngest, Princess Anne, is tenderly held in the arms of Elizabeth. The inclusion of a cheerful baby Anne, interacting playfully with her sibling, adds a touch of warmth and familial affection to the scene. The background of the painting features a richly draped red velvet curtain and a classical landscape, elements that emphasize the nobility and sophistication of the subjects.

Sir Anthony van Dyck (1599 – 1641) was a Flemish Baroque artist who became the leading court painter in England after success in the Spanish Netherlands and Italy.

The seventh child of Frans van Dyck, a wealthy Antwerp silk merchant, Anthony painted from an early age. He was successful as an independent painter in his late teens, and became a master in the Antwerp guild in 1618. By this time he was working in the studio of the leading northern painter of the day, Peter Paul Rubens, who became a major influence on his work.
