More about this artwork
Félix Vallotton, a notable painter of the post-impressionist period, captures a vivid and dynamic seascape in "La baignade à Etretat," painted in 1899. The artwork portrays a lively scene of bathers at the shore of Etretat, a renowned location on the Normandy coast famous for its dramatic cliffs and scenic beauty. In this painting, Vallotton employs bold, expressive colors and distinct, almost graphic outlines that underscore the vivacious atmosphere of a bustling seaside. The composition is bustling with activity; numerous figures are immersed in the water, depicted in a variety of poses and outfits that suggest the leisure and sport of seaside life at the turn of the century. The bather in the striking red attire commands central attention, surrounded by other swimmers in soft caps and dark costumes. The green-blue hues of the water, set against the pebbly beach, enhance the vibrancy of the scene.Foreground details include individuals wading close to shore and a rowboat containing figures that contribute to the narrative of a busy day at the beach. The painting is an excellent example of Vallotton’s keen ability to blend realism and stylization, capturing both a specific moment and the timeless pleasure of a day by the sea. Through "La baignade à Etretat," Vallotton not only documents a social scene but also intricately plays with color and form to invoke the lively essence of a summer day.
