More about this artwork

Artist: Charles François Daubigny"Beach at Ebb Tide," painted by Charles François Daubigny between 1850 and 1878, evokes the serene atmosphere of a coastal landscape at low tide. This masterpiece of the mid-19th century reflects Daubigny's profound connection to nature and his pioneering role in the Barbizon school, which emphasized the beauty of natural scenes painted en plein air (outdoors). In the painting, the expansive beach stretches across the canvas under a vast, subtly dynamic sky. The sky itself is a tableau of gentle blues and soft pinks, suggesting the quiet glow of either dawn or dusk. The horizon is marked by a thin strip of sea, capturing the tranquil moment when the water withdraws and leaves behind wet sands. Daubigny's brushwork skillfully conveys both the texture of the sandy beach saturated with seawater and the reflective quality of the exposed surfaces, enhancing the overall feeling of dampness and vastness. On the lower right, a solitary figure, possibly a fisherman, provides a human element to the otherwise uninhabited landscape. This figure, painted with muted tones, seems to be either contemplating the vista or searching the beach, adding a narrative element of introspection or discovery to the scene.
