More about this artwork
Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo's etching, titled "The Flight, Joseph at Right and Mary and Angel at Left" (1750–1753), is a compelling depiction that captures a critical moment in religious narrative with delicate intricacy and dynamic composition. In this artwork, Tiepolo illustrates the Biblical flight of the Holy Family into Egypt. The scene is divided into distinct zones of action, showcasing his mastery in creating a narrative flow within a single frame. On the right, we see Joseph leading a donkey, which carries the young Jesus and the Virgin Mary's possessions, bundled in a large, heavily packed basket. Joseph's figure, depicted in motion, evokes a sense of urgency as he glances back towards Mary and the angel, ensuring their safety and progress. To the left, the Virgin Mary, draped in modest garments and a hood, clutches the young Jesus close to her chest, embodying a maternal protectiveness. Accompanying her is an angel, who seems to be guiding and comforting Mary through this arduous journey. The angel’s presence not only adds a celestial aspect to the composition but also reinforces a sense of divine intervention and protection that pervades the theme. The background is a wild, rustic landscape, rendered with fine, detailed strokes that suggest a rugged terrain, implying the challenges of their journey. The dramatic palm tree that arches over the group and the scattered rocks add to the atmosphere of turmoil and haste that surrounds the family’s escape.
