We are delighted to feature the remarkable work of Anthony van Dyck, an iconic figure in the world of Baroque art, with his compelling drawing titled "Portrait of a Man Standing." This exquisite piece is believed to be a study or preliminary sketch that showcases the artist's masterful handling of chalk on paper, revealing the intimate preparatory stages behind his painted portraits. In this drawing, a man is depicted standing in a dignified pose, exuding an aura of respectability and confidence. The subject is dressed in the attire typical of the aristocracy in the 17th century, wearing a broad ruffled collar and a sumptuous cloak that drapes elegantly over his shoulders. His gaze is direct and seems to convey a calm authority, indicative of his social stature and the decorum of the time.Van Dyck's skill in rendering fabrics with such realism in this piece is particularly noteworthy. The soft folds of the cloak and the intricate lace of the collar are drawn with a detailed attention that suggests both texture and weight, demonstrating van Dyck's finesse with a chalk medium."Portrait of a Man Standing" not only captivates us with its technical excellence but also offers a fascinating glimpse into the fashion and cultural norms of the early 1600s. Sir Anthony van Dyck (1599 – 1641) was a Flemish Baroque artist who became the leading court painter in England after success in the Spanish Netherlands and Italy.

The seventh child of Frans van Dyck, a wealthy Antwerp silk merchant, Anthony painted from an early age. He was successful as an independent painter in his late teens, and became a master in the Antwerp guild in 1618. By this time he was working in the studio of the leading northern painter of the day, Peter Paul Rubens, who became a major influence on his work.
