More about this artwork
In the stunning artwork titled "Elle était plus belle que les rêves" from 1892, artist Maurice Denis captivates us with a contemplative portrayal of ethereal beauty. This piece, whose title translates to "She was more beautiful than dreams," features a young woman, depicted in a gentle profile view that evokes a sense of introspective serenity. The background, deep and textured in shades of teal and green, contrasts with the soft, luminous tones of the subject's skin, highlighting her delicate features. Denis's use of loose yet discernible brushwork gives depth to the painting, with the light seeming to emanate from the woman herself, as if she resides in a realm of dreamlike fantasy. The inclusion of pastel-colored flowers near her shoulder not only adds a romantic element but also suggests themes of purity, youth, and possibly the ephemeral nature of beauty and dreams.Maurice Denis, a member of the Nabis group, is known for his ability to blend symbolism with a personal intimacy, and this artwork is a prime example of his mastery. The subtle interplay of texture and color creates an almost tactile experience for the viewer, drawing one into a reverie that transcends time and space. This painting, delicate yet profound, invites the viewer to reflect on the beauty that exists in the quiet moments, the ones that feel as though they are born from the very essence of dreams.

French painter Maurice Denis (1870-1943) was one of the leading artists during the transition from Impressionism to Modern Art. He was heavily influenced by the Symbolist works of Paul Gauguin. Denis would paint with rich colors and experiment with warm and cool colors. Some of his theories have become the foundations of cubism, fauvism, and abstract art.
