More about this artwork

The artwork titled "Landscape" by Joseph Farington presents a serene study of nature rendered with subtle precision. In this delicate drawing, Farington captures the sprawling beauty of a pastoral landscape. The foreground reveals softly undulating hills dotted with clusters of dense, shapely trees, beneath which a few livestock graze quietly, adding a bucolic touch to the scene. The middle ground extends into a tranquil lake that reflects the gentle contours of the surrounding landscape, leading the viewer’s eye toward the dramatic backdrop. Here, rugged mountains rise sharply, their rocky facades delineated with fine lines that emphasize their majestic and enduring presence. The use of light washes and precise but restrained line work gives the painting an ethereal quality, suggesting the transient beauty of the natural world.

Joseph Farington RA was an 18th-century English landscape painter and diarist.

Born in Leigh, Lancashire, Farington was the second of seven sons of William Farington and Esther Gilbody. His father was the rector of Warrington and vicar of Leigh. Three of his brothers—William, Henry, and Richard—were "employed in the naval service of the East India Company". Edward died of yellow fever when he was 32. Robert attended Brasenose College and became vicar of St George in the East, London (whose advowson was held by Brasenose). George Farington became a painter, like Joseph himself.
