More about this artwork

** In the serene and evocative painting "Une vieille demoiselle" by the celebrated Dutch artist Jozef Israëls, we are invited into a moment of quiet introspection and domestic simplicity. This artwork beautifully encapsulates the themes of solitude and the gentle flow of everyday life that Israëls is renowned for.The painting portrays an elderly woman, dressed in traditional black attire with a white cap, as she sits comfortably in a rustic wooden chair. Her hands are delicately engaged in what appears to be needlework, suggesting a scene of daily activity rooted in peaceful contemplation. Her expression is one of contentment and possibly reflection, rendered with Israëls' characteristic sensitivity and attention to emotional depth. To her left, a large window bathed in soft, diffused light reveals a glimpse of the countryside, connecting the indoor tranquility to the broader, natural world outside. The curtains, slightly parted, flutter gently, adding a touch of airiness to the composition. Below the window, a simple wooden table holds a few mundane objects, reinforcing the theme of everyday life.Adding to the warmth of the scene, a small dog lies comfortably on a rug, enjoying a meal—its presence further accentuating the themes of companionship and domesticity.Through his masterful use of muted colors and skillful brushwork, Israëls brings this quiet scene to life with a profound sense of realism and emotional resonance.

Jozef Israëls was a Dutch painter. He was a leading member of the group of landscape painters referred to as the Hague School and, during his lifetime, "the most respected Dutch artist of the second half of the nineteenth century".

He was born in Groningen, of Jewish parents. His father, Hartog Abraham Israëls, intended for him to be a businessman, and it was only after a determined struggle that he was allowed to embark on an artistic career. He studied initially from 1835 to 1842 at the Minerva Academy in his home town Groningen.
