More about this artwork

"The Artist’s Wife and Emilie Von Etter on the Balcony in Cannes (1891)" by Albert Edelfelt captures a serene, intimate moment shared between two women on a sunlit balcony overlooking the azure expanse of the Mediterranean Sea. The painting is rich in detail and vibrant lighting, characteristic of Edelfelt's skillful approach to color and form. The scene depicts Edelfelt's wife, dressed in a flowing white gown that hints at the fashion of the late 19th century, seated next to Emilie Von Etter, who wears a brown dress. Both women seem to be engaged in a quiet conversation, perhaps about the book that rests in the lap of the artist’s wife. Their poses and expressions suggest ease and familiarity, evoking a sense of peaceful companionship. The backdrop of this personal interaction is the breathtaking view of Cannes, with its distant shores and sailboats gently gliding across the water. A striking column on the balcony partially frames the scene, adding a structural element that contrasts with the fluid forms of the sea and sky. On the balcony ledge, a vase with fresh flowers blends the colors of the women’s attire with the natural hues of their surroundings, enhancing the harmony of the composition.
