More about this artwork
Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita's drawing, entitled *Twee figuren tegenover de kop van een dier dat hooi eet uit een kom* (1943-10-20), features a distinctive and expressive interplay of figures rendered in a bold, linear style. The art piece presents two human figures and the head of an animal engaged in a minimalistic yet evocative scene. The animal, possibly a horse or a donkey, is depicted eating hay from a bowl, absorbing the center of attention as both humans seem to be engaged either with it or each other. The figure on the left, drawn with exaggerated facial features and a look of concern or surprise, adds a dramatic feel to the composition. Facing her is the other figure, wearing a patterned garment and displaying a profile view with a peacefully contemplative demeanor.De Mesquita's use of clear, confident lines and the absence of shading emphasizes the graphic quality and emotional tenor of the drawing. The overall composition and the interaction between the characters in this piece may invoke questions about the relationship between humans and animals, or perhaps reflect on a moment of everyday life, resonating with themes of contemplation and interaction.
