More about this artwork

Henri Le Sidaner's enchanting painting "Roses de Trianon" exudes a serene beauty and a palpable sense of tranquility. Painted in 1917, this artwork in Impressionistic style captures a picturesque scene set against the architectural elegance of three large arched windows. The windows, adorned with intricate leaded glass, serve as a majestic backdrop, reflecting the delicate light and colors of the surrounding garden. The forefront of the painting is dominated by a lush array of blooming roses, painted with a soft, almost dreamlike quality. The roses seem to float gently above the verdant foliage, adding a vibrant splash of color—shades of pink and green dominate the palette. These floral elements are carefully placed in ornamental pots and dispersed throughout the lawn that spans the foreground. At the visual core of the composition is a subtle yet captivating presence of a pond. The water's surface reflects the floral vibrancy and architectural grandeur, weaving together the elements of nature and human craftsmanship. This reflective quality adds depth and a sense of continuity between the natural and the constructed spaces within the painting.Henri Le Sidaner, known for his quiet, meditative scenes often devoid of human figures, focuses here on the interplay of light, color, and texture. "Roses de Trianon" not only demonstrates his masterful handling of light and shadow but also his ability to invoke emotion through the atmospheric quality of his chosen environments. This painting invites viewers to a moment of reflection, perhaps reminiscing about a peaceful afternoon spent in a secluded garden, surrounded by the beauty of nature and the whispers of history.

Henri Eugène Augustin Le Sidaner (7 August 1862 – 14 July 1939) who was a contemporary of the Post-impressionists, was an intimist painter known for his paintings of domestic interiors and quiet street scenes. His style contained elements of impressionism with the influences of Édouard Manet, Monet and of the Pointillists discernible in his work. Le Sidaner favoured a subdued use of colour, preferring nuanced greys and opals applied with uneven, dappled brushstrokes to create atmosphere and mysticism. A skilled nocturne painter, he travelled widely throughout France and Europe before settling at Gerberoy in the Picardy countryside from where he painted for over thirty years.

Le Sidaner's paintings and pastels were widely collected throughout his career. His seductive views of the gardens he created in the ruins of the medieval fortress at Gerberoy, with their recently vacated tables dappled in sunlight and overhung by roses, have cemented his reputation as a unique artist who does not fit easily into an art movement.
