More about this artwork

George Hendrik Breitner's painting, "Lunchtime at the Building Site on the Van Diemenstraat in Amsterdam," masterfully captures a moment of pause in the bustling life of workers in the 19th century. Painted in 1897, this artwork provides a vivid snapshot of Amsterdam’s expansion during an era of rigorous industrial growth. The scene is set against a backdrop of an active building site on the Van Diemenstraat, which was then a major thoroughfare undergoing significant urban transformations. The focus of the painting is a group of workers taking a break from their laborious tasks. They are gathered on planks and makeshift seats, engrossed in their midday meal and casual exchanges, giving a sense of camaraderie and shared endeavour.Breitner's use of earthy tones and the rough, dynamic brush strokes enhance the ruggedness of the environment and the physicality of the workers' lives. The background is a tapestry of ships and construction materials, signaling the industrial activity typical of Amsterdam’s harbor in the late 1800s.This painting, notable for its historical context and artistic technique, offers a glimpse into the daily lives of ordinary people, embodying the spirit of an era marked by hard work and community.

George Hendrik Breitner (12 September 1857 – 5 June 1923) was a Dutch painter and photographer. An important figure in Amsterdam Impressionism, he is noted especially for his paintings of street scenes and harbours in a realistic style. He painted en plein air, and became interested in photography as a means of documenting street life and atmospheric effects – rainy weather in particular – as reference materials for his paintings.
