More about this artwork
Francois Boucher, a master of Rococo art, captures serene beauty in "Etude de jeune femme endormie," an exquisite study of a young, sleeping woman. In this detailed chalk and pastel composition, Boucher's talent in portraying soft, delicate textures and gentle forms shines through. The young woman, depicted in a moment of tranquil repose, leans comfortably against a cushion while seated. Boucher's use of soft light and shadow skillfully accentuates the gentle curves of her body and the smoothness of her skin, emphasizing a sense of peaceful elegance. Her partially draped figure and relaxed pose evoke a naturalistic and intimate atmosphere, characteristic of Boucher’s tender approach to his subjects.

François Boucher (1703–1770) was a French painter, engraver, illustrator and printmaker. He was a proponent of Rococo and had a huge influence in spreading the style throughout Europe. His art was idyllic and voluptuous with a high-toned palette of blues and pinks. He created designs for all decorative arts, porcelains and tapestries. Boucher also painted several portraits including his patroness Madame de Pompadour. He is one of the most celebrated decorative artists of the 18th century.
