More about this artwork
“Le reflet dans la fontaine” (The Reflection in the Fountain) by Maurice Denis, created in 1897, is a remarkable work that beautifully captures the essence of Symbolist art. Denis, known for his role in the Nabi group, often explored themes of spirituality and the idyllic through his artwork, and this painting is no exception. The composition draws the viewer into a serene, almost dream-like garden scene. At the center of the painting is a figure that appears to be a nymph or a delicate representation of a young woman dipping into a reflective pool of water. The figure, rendered with subtle, soothing colors, contrasts with the more solid, earthy tones of the surrounding garden.Beside the pool, another figure, possibly observing the nymph, is seated wearing a polka dot garment which adds a touch of vivid pattern contrasting the overall placidity of the scene. The backdrop features architectural elements and lush greenery, enhancing the sense of a secluded sanctum.Maurice Denis’s use of soft, pastel hues and gentle contours imbues the painting with a tranquil quality, inviting contemplation. “Le reflet dans la fontaine” not only portrays a physical reflection but also suggests a reflective, introspective experience for the viewer, inviting one to ponder deeper narratives of beauty, nature, and perhaps the reflection of the self in the natural world.

French painter Maurice Denis (1870-1943) was one of the leading artists during the transition from Impressionism to Modern Art. He was heavily influenced by the Symbolist works of Paul Gauguin. Denis would paint with rich colors and experiment with warm and cool colors. Some of his theories have become the foundations of cubism, fauvism, and abstract art.
