More about this artwork

Artist: Ľudovít Čordák Date: 1895-1905Ľudovít Čordák's masterpiece, "Košatý strom pri jazere," painted between 1895 and 1905, captivates with its harmonious blend of nature's tranquility and the subtle interplay of light and shadow. This enchanting work transports viewers to a serene lakeside setting, dominated by the formidable presence of a leafy tree. The painting is finely textured, with brush strokes that convey the lushness of the foliage and the reflective surface of the water. Čordák’s palette is a symphony of earthy greens, muted blues, and hints of yellows — colors that evoke a sense of peace and a hint of melancholy. The sky, a composition of greys and blues, suggests a cloudy or overcast day, casting a soft light that enhances the reflective quality of the lake.In the foreground, the lake is rendered with fluid, sweeping strokes, suggesting the gentle movement of water. The massive tree, which gives the painting its title, anchors the composition. Its branches stretch out expansively, shielding the middle ground, where hints of a distant landscape can be perceived. This landscape is not merely a visual treat but also an invitation to reflect on the quiet beauty of untouched nature.

Ludwig Deutsch was an Austrian painter who settled in Paris and became a noted Orientalist artist.

Details of Ludwig Deutsch's life are obscure. He was born in Vienna in 1855 into a well-established Jewish family. His father Ignaz Deutsch was a financier at the Austrian court. He studied at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts 1872–1875, then, in 1878, moved to Paris where he became strongly associated with Orientalism.
