More about this artwork
Édouard Manet, a pivotal figure in the transition from Realism to Impressionism, captures a compelling portrait of a Gypsy woman in his painting "Gypsy with a Cigarette." This striking artwork highlights Manet's bold brush strokes and his fascination with the portrayal of everyday characters from various walks of life.In the painting, the subject is depicted with a confident, somewhat contemplative expression. She rests her cheek on her hand, embodying a casual yet self-assured posture. The Gypsy's attire is vibrant, with a richly colored blouse in shades of burnt orange and white, contrasted by a deep red skirt and accented with gold earrings that add a touch of brightness to the composition. The background, loosely brushed in blues and whites, suggests a sky that perhaps echoes the transient lifestyle often associated with Gypsy culture. A ghostly outline of what appears to be a horse adds another layer of narrative, hinting at travel and a life on the move.Manet's use of light and shadow, combined with his fluid, expressive paint application, gives life and texture to the woman's skin and clothing, making "Gypsy with a Cigarette" not just a simple portrait, but a story captured in brush strokes.

Édouard Manet (1832–1883) was a French modernist painter and one of the first 19th century artists to paint modern life. His impressionist style is characterized by relatively small and thin brushstrokes that create emphasis on light depiction. Manet was one of the key artists in the transition from realism to impressionism, along with Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, and Pierre-Auguste Renoir. However, he resisted involvement in any one specific style of painting, and only presented his work to the Salon of Paris instead of impressionist exhibitions. His early masterworks, The Luncheon on the Grass and Olympia, created great controversy and served as a rallying point for other young painters.
