More about this artwork
The painting captures a dusky, atmospheric scene at a harbor. A dimly lit sky, filled with heavy clouds reflecting the last light of day, looms over an old, majestic abbey and church perched atop a hill. Below, the town sprawls along the waterfront, consisting of densely packed houses and buildings that hint at a bustling life. In the foreground, several boats are scattered, with one sailboat central in the image, its sails unfurled and catching the dwindling light. Silhouettes of people can be seen near the docks and on the boats, going about their evening routines. The water shimmers with reflections, suggesting a calm evening.

Today, he is considered one of the great painters of the Victorian era, as well as one of the best and most accomplished nightscape and townscape artists of all time. He was called a "remarkable and imaginative painter" by the critic and historian Christopher Wood in Victorian Painting (1999).
