More about this artwork

Joseph Farington's delicate pen and ink drawing, "Landscape with Trees by a Lake," from the latter half of the 1780s, typifies the quintessential pastoral scene. The artwork captures a serene moment by a mirrored lake, surrounded by lush, mature trees that partially frame the image, guiding the viewer's eye across the tranquil water.Detail is exquisitely rendered in Farington's characteristic light and fluent style; the lake acts as the focal point, reflecting the silhouettes of the trees and the sky. On the right side of the composition, a prominently featured tree shows detailed branches that reach into the sky, showcasing Farington's skilled handling of natural forms. In the background, amidst the clusters of foliage, the soft outline of a church tower emerges, suggesting the proximity of human habitation to this peaceful natural setting. This inclusion adds a layer of narrative, hinting at the coexistence of mankind with nature, a common theme in 18th-century landscape art. This piece, though mainly monochromatic, resonates deeply with those who appreciate the subtle interplay of light and texture. It is a perfect example of Farington's ability to capture the enduring beauty of the English countryside in a profoundly simple yet visually eloquent manner.

Joseph Farington RA was an 18th-century English landscape painter and diarist.

Three of his brothers—William, Henry, and Richard—were "employed in the naval service of the East India Company". Edward died of yellow fever when he was 32. Robert attended Brasenose College and became vicar of St George in the East, London (whose advowson was held by Brasenose). George Farington became a painter, like Joseph himself.
