More about this artwork

Ľudovít Čordák's "Landscape with a Flooded Stream" from 1917 is a serene yet evocative portrayal of a natural setting, embodying the rich textural and color qualities characteristic of early 20th-century landscape painting. This artwork captures a moment where nature displays both its tranquility and its dynamism. In this painting, the viewer's eye is drawn to the shimmering surface of a stream that has overflowed its banks. The reflections in the water fuse with patches of sky, adding a sense of depth and luminosity to the composition. Surrounding the stream are luxuriant greens and soft earth tones, suggesting the lushness of a late spring or early summer landscape. Čordák achieves a vibrant, impressionistic feel through his use of light and shade, rendering the foliage and the distant hills with deft brush strokes that convey both calm and motion. The choice of colors—ranging from deep blues and greens in the water to warmer hues on the land—creates a balanced and harmonious effect, inviting contemplation and immersion into the natural world. Čordák's depiction is not just a visual treat; it invites us to reflect on nature's cycles of growth and renewal, observed through the lens of a masterful artist.

Ludwig Deutsch was an Austrian painter who settled in Paris and became a noted Orientalist artist.

Details of Ludwig Deutsch's life are obscure. He was born in Vienna in 1855 into a well-established Jewish family. His father Ignaz Deutsch was a financier at the Austrian court. He studied at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts 1872–1875, then, in 1878, moved to Paris where he became strongly associated with Orientalism.
