More about this artwork
Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita masterfully showcases his skill and unique artistic vision in the woodcut "Sneeuwuil" (Snow Owl), created in 1927. This striking piece encapsulates the distinguished grace and poise of a snow owl, whose bundled and heavy plumage dominates the composition. Mesquita's use of sharp contrasts between the black and white emphasizes the intricate feather patterns, conveying the dense, yet soft texture of the owl's feathers.Through a simplified, almost abstract form, Mesquita captures not just a realistic depiction, but rather the essential spirit and character of the snow owl. The owl is depicted almost as a sculpted figure, with its feathers layered rhythmically, enhancing its majestic and serene demeanor. The bold lines and minimalistic use of space serve to draw the viewer's focus entirely on the bird, instilling a sense of quiet and introspection."Sneeuwuil" is an exemplary piece that reflects Mesquita's prowess in woodcut technique, and his ability to evoke depth and personality through a highly stylized form.
