More about this artwork
The poignant painting "Mater Dolorosa" by Jozef Israëls stands out as a masterful example of emotional expression through art. In this portrait, Israëls captures the visage of an elderly woman draped in a somber black shawl with a blue headscarf, her face projecting a profound sorrow and introspection that is deeply moving. The title, "Mater Dolorosa," which translates to "Mother of Sorrows," hints at the deeper narrative portrayed in this painting. Traditionally associated with the Virgin Mary in her grief over the suffering of her son, Jesus, the choice of title here evokes a universal theme of maternal mourning and loss. Israëls, known for his ability to depict the hardships of human life with sensitivity, uses a limited color palette dominated by dark tones to enhance the somber mood. Her gaze, slightly upward and beyond the viewer, seems to transcend the immediate, hinting at a resignation to fate or a plea for relief. The subdued lighting accentuates her worn features and the reflective sadness in her eyes, inviting the viewer to pause and reflect on the weight of her emotions.Israëls’ skillful brushwork and his focus on the emotional state of his subjects make "Mater Dolorosa" a powerful work, evocative of the resilience and the silent strength found in the face of sorrow.

Jozef Israëls was a Dutch painter. He was a leading member of the group of landscape painters referred to as the Hague School and, during his lifetime, "the most respected Dutch artist of the second half of the nineteenth century".
He was born in Groningen, of Jewish parents. His father, Hartog Abraham Israëls, intended for him to be a businessman, and it was only after a determined struggle that he was allowed to embark on an artistic career. He studied initially from 1835 to 1842 at the Minerva Academy in his home town Groningen.
