More about this artwork

"Boy with Golden Curls (Portrait of Harris Whittemore, Jr., B.A. 1918)" by Mary Cassatt is a compelling example of the artist's delicate and expressive portraiture style. This painting, created in 1898, captures the tender innocence of childhood through the portrayal of young Harris Whittemore, Jr., attired in a striking blue outfit with a soft white collar, set against a richly colored background.Cassatt, renowned for her contributions to the Impressionist movement, here employs soft, fluid brushstrokes that emphasize the youthful delicacy of the boy’s features, from his golden curls to the slight flush on his cheeks. Her technique in capturing the textures of fabric and the subtle interplay of light accentuates the child's contemplative expression, suggesting a quiet, introspective moment. The artist uses a palette dominated by blues and greens, with touches of white that draw the viewer's eye to the boy’s contemplative gaze. The painting not only showcases Cassatt’s signature focus on children and family settings but also highlights her skill in using color and composition to evoke emotion, creating a captivating depiction of young Whittemore’s essence during a seemingly ordinary yet intimate moment.

Mary Stevenson Cassatt was an American painter and printmaker. She was born in Allegheny City, Pennsylvania (now part of Pittsburgh’s North Side), but lived much of her adult life in France where she befriended Edgar Degas and exhibited with the Impressionists. Cassatt often created images of the social and private lives of women, with particular emphasis on the intimate bonds between mothers and children.

She was described by Gustave Geffroy as one of "les trois grandes dames" (the three great ladies) of Impressionism alongside Marie Bracquemond and Berthe Morisot. In 1879, Diego Martelli compared her to Degas, as they both sought to depict movement, light, and design in the most modern sense.
