More about this artwork

In this charming and intimate portrait by Pierre Bonnard, titled "La femme au basset ou Portrait de Marthe Bonnard au basset" (circa 1912), the artist presents a serene scene featuring his muse and wife, Marthe Bonnard, alongside a basset hound. Bonnard, known for his vibrant use of color and innovative compositional strategies, captures a moment of quiet companionship that resonates with warmth and subtlety. The painting portrays Marthe adorned in an elegant black dress complemented by a striking blue hat, sitting pensively beside the placid basset hound. Her gaze, seemingly introspective and slightly distant, suggests a moment of inner contemplation. The rich jewel tones of her attire contrast beautifully against the swirling, impressionistic background rendered in soft pastels and robust hues.Bonnard's delicate brush strokes and the tender depiction of the dog, which rests comfortably by Marthe's side, lend a sense of tranquility to the artwork. His skill in mixing textures and colors is particularly evident in the luminous portrayal of Marthe's necklace and the reflective quality of her hat. This painting not only offers a glimpse into the private world shared between Bonnard, his beloved wife, and their pets, but also showcases his mastery in conveying the texture of fabrics and the subtleties of human expression.

Pierre Bonnard (1867-1947) was a French post-impressionist painter, printmaker, and the leader of the Intimist art movement. He is regarded as one of the greatest colourists of modern art. Together with other young artists in Montmarte, Bonnard co-founded the group known as Les Nabis, translated from the arabic word “prophet”. He was known for a painting style that was very intimate, featuring friends in a garden, nudes, interiors and sunlit objects of everyday life. He began by painting in watercolor, composing scenes and deeply familiarizing himself with the subject, before transferring the composition to canvas. In many of his paintings, his mistress Marthe was the main subject. She was his most important model and was often pictured nude, after 30 years they finally married.
