More about this artwork

"Virgin and Child" (1516), a captivating painting by Albrecht Dürer, delicately portrays the tenderness shared between the Virgin Mary and the Christ Child. Fascinatingly, this work reflects Dürer’s mastery in capturing human emotion and his keen attention to detail. In this tender depiction, the Virgin Mary is shown with a serene expression, holding a lively and curious Baby Jesus on her lap. Both figures are rendered with exquisite detail, highlighting Dürer's skill in flesh tones and textile rendering. The Virgin's gaze is soft and contemplative, directed downward toward the Child, creating an atmosphere of intimate connection and maternal love. The color palette Dürer chose adds to the warmth of the scene, with Mary donned in a striking red robe that richly contrasts with the muted tones of her undergarment and the subdued background. The year of creation, 1516, alongside Dürer’s monogram, is subtly included at the top right corner, serving as a testament to the authenticity and era of this remarkable composition.

Christian paintings, woodcuts and landscapes by the German Renaissance master Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528). Dürer's pieces on Christian themes and allegory are considered to be the finest examples of the Northern Renaissance. One of Dürer's most famous works on Christ is his "Crucifixion" woodcut (1503). The piece demonstrates Dürer's mastery of the medium and deep understanding of Christian symbolism. The work depicts the crucifixion of Christ in a powerful and realistic manner, with an emphasis on the suffering and sacrifice of Christ. Dürer began his career as an apprentice in Nuremberg to the master craftsman Michael Wolgemut. He later became the founding member of the city's painters' guild and was an active member of humanist circles prominent in Nuremberg at the time.
