More about this artwork

Explore the luminous world of Henri Martin through his 1910 masterpiece, "Jacques Martin-Ferrières à Marquayrol." This spellbinding painting presents the figure of Jacques Martin-Ferrières, the son of the artist, standing amidst the serene beauty of Marquayrol, where Martin owned a beloved house.Depicted in Henri Martin's signature Post-Impressionist style, this piece is awash with a soft, speckled light that captures the gentle atmosphere of a sunny garden. The subject, poised confidently, is portrayed in a relaxed stance wearing a light suit and a wide-brimmed hat, conveying a sense of leisure and casual elegance. The lush greenery and flowering plants around him are rendered with a dreamlike quality, their colors merging and melting into dabs of yellows, greens, and whites that suggest the luscious vibrancy of life. The composition's dazzling light and shadow interplay, achieved through Martin’s technique of stippling, creates a near ethereal realm, inviting the viewer to step into a moment of tranquil harmony. This painting not only celebrates the beauty of nature but also the intimate connection between the artist and his son, reflecting a personal snapshot of family life within an extraordinary landscape.

Henri-Jean Guillaume "Henri" Martin (5 August 1860 – 12 November 1943) was a French painter. Elected to the Académie des Beaux-Arts in 1917, he is known for his early 1920s work on the walls of the Salle de l'Assemblée générale, where the members of the Conseil d'État meet in the Palais-Royal in Paris. Other notable institutions that have featured his Post-Impressionist paintings in their halls through public procurement include the Élysée Palace, Sorbonne, Hôtel de Ville de Paris, Palais de Justice de Paris, as well as Capitole de Toulouse, although the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Bordeaux and Musée des Augustins also have sizeable public collections.
