More about this artwork

Immerse yourself in the timeless charm of Oscar-Claude Monet's "Woman with a Parasol – Madame Monet and Her Son," painted in 1875. This enchanting work artfully captures a fleeting moment under the open sky, featuring Monet's beloved wife, Camille, and their son, Jean.In this vivid representation, Camille Monet stands elegantly, her figure slightly tilted against a brisk breeze. She holds gracefully a large, billowing green parasol which shields her from the gentle sun. The soft, fluid strokes convey the movement of her white dress and the rustling grass around her. Behind her, a little to the side, stands Jean, her son, clad in a hat, quietly observing the scene or perhaps gazing directly at us, the viewers. The background is a dynamic swirl of clouds, embodying Monet's fascination with capturing natural light and the changing face of the sky. The quick, lively brushstrokes in the blue sky contrast with the detailed portrayal of the figures, emphasizing Monet's skill in using color and light to evoke depth and emotion. This painting is celebrated for its portrayal of domestic tranquility and the tender relationship between mother and child, set against the serene landscape that Monet adored. It is a prime example of the Impressionist movement's celebration of ordinary moments, and Monet’s exceptional ability to chronicle the nuances of natural light and shadow.

Oscar-Claude Monet was a founder of French Impressionist painting, and the most consistent and prolific practitioner of the movement's philosophy of expressing one's perceptions before nature. Monet's ambition of documenting the French countryside led him to adopt a method of painting the same scene many times in order to capture the changing of light and the passing of the seasons. From 1883 Monet lived in Giverny, where he purchased a house and property, and began a vast landscaping project which included lily ponds that would become the subjects of his best-known works. In 1899 he began painting the water lilies, first in vertical views with a Japanese bridge as a central feature, and later in the series of large-scale paintings that was to occupy him continuously for the next 20 years of his life.
