More about this artwork

"L’entrée de Giverny sous la neige" (1885) by Oscar-Claude Monet captures a mesmerizing winter scene at the entrance of the village Giverny, renowned for its significance in the Impressionist art movement. This painting invites viewers into a serene landscape enveloped in snow, demonstrating Monet's masterful use of color and light to portray the chill and stillness of a snowy day.The composition features a winding road that draws the viewer’s eye into the heart of a softly-blanketed village. On the left, a bare tree stands sentinel, its branches dusted with snow, contrasting with the more densely covered trees in the background. The delicate play of light and shadow, achieved through Monet's distinctive brush strokes, seems to make the snow glisten, suggesting the quiet beauty of winter without the use of stark, icy blues often typical to the theme. Instead, Monet opts for a palette of muted whites, greys, and hints of pastel, imbuing the scene with a gentle warmth despite the cold subject matter. This artwork not only reflects Monet's fascination with natural light and its transformations but also provides a historical glimpse into the rural French landscape of the late 19th century, untouched by the hustle of modern life.

Oscar-Claude Monet was a founder of French Impressionist painting, and the most consistent and prolific practitioner of the movement's philosophy of expressing one's perceptions before nature. Monet's ambition of documenting the French countryside led him to adopt a method of painting the same scene many times in order to capture the changing of light and the passing of the seasons. From 1883 Monet lived in Giverny, where he purchased a house and property, and began a vast landscaping project which included lily ponds that would become the subjects of his best-known works. In 1899 he began painting the water lilies, first in vertical views with a Japanese bridge as a central feature, and later in the series of large-scale paintings that was to occupy him continuously for the next 20 years of his life.
