More about this artwork
Arthur Rackham's enchanting painting, "Mother Goose," wonderfully captures the whimsical spirit of traditional nursery rhymes. In this beautifully detailed work, the scene is divided between the ethereal and the earthly. The upper portion is a fantastical display where Mother Goose, riding a goose, leads a cavalcade of children soaring blissfully through a night sky filled with clouds. Accompanying her are more geese and children, some of whom interestingly wield brooms like tiny sorcerers.Below, the scene contrasts with a snowy landscape peppered with figures from what appears to be a bygone era. Children and adults alike, dressed in traditional attire, engage in activities or simply watch the spectacle in the sky. The scene encapsulates a magical world where the boundaries between the real and the mythical blur, inviting viewers to let their imaginations take flight.

Arthur Rackham (19 September 1867 – 6 September 1939) was an English book illustrator. He is recognised as one of the leading figures during the Golden Age of British book illustration. His work is noted for its robust pen and ink drawings, which were combined with the use of watercolour, a technique he developed due to his background as a journalistic illustrator.
