More about this artwork

"The Call" by Paul Gauguin, painted in 1902, encapsulates the distinct aesthetic and thematic approach that characterizes much of his later work. This vibrant painting is set in the idyllic and remote landscapes of Tahiti, where Gauguin spent much of his later years. The artwork features three Tahitian women, depicted in a style that blends local visual elements with European post-impressionist influences.Central to the painting is the group of women, each portrayed in a different pose, suggesting a narrative or a moment caught in time. One woman sits pensively with her back to the viewer, another stands gripping a tree and gazing out at the viewer with a protective gesture towards the third, who stands partly behind her, cloaked partially in a blue garment that contrasts vividly with the lush greens and earthy reds of the background. Their attire and the simplicity of their surroundings reflect the blend of indigenous culture and the impacts of European colonization. In the foreground, a bright array of tropical flowers and fruits enriches the scene, adding a burst of color that highlights Gauguin’s love for vivid, natural elements and symbolizes the fecundity and natural abundance of the Tahitian landscape."The Call" is emblematic of Gauguin’s quest to capture the essence and spirit of the places and people he depicted, far removed from the industrialized environment of Europe. This painting, not just a visual delight, invites viewers to ponder themes of cultural identity, connection to nature, and the serene yet complex life in Tahiti during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Eugène Henri Paul Gauguin was a French Post-Impressionist artist. Unappreciated until after his death, Gauguin is now recognized for his experimental use of color and Synthetist style that were distinct from Impressionism. Toward the end of his life, he spent ten years in French Polynesia. The paintings from this time depict people or landscapes from that region.
